Office of General Counsel

The attorneys within the Office of  General Counsel (OGC) are the only attorneys authorized to provide legal advice or representation on behalf of Brown University. The OGC does not represent or advise individual faculty members, staff, or students about personal legal matters.

It's our mission to provide promptness in our responses to requests for legal advice:

  • A request to the OGC for legal advice –whether by email, text, or phone call—should be acknowledged by OGC within 24 hours.
  • The OGC, in consultation with the campus client seeking advice, should establish a timeline for giving a substantive response to the request for advice. Once the timeline is established, the campus client should be apprised of any needed deviation from the timeline.
  • If consideration of a request for legal advice requires one or more meetings with the inquirer or other, the meetings should be scheduled promptly.
  • When legal matters arise from outside the university—subpoenas, government inquiries or investigations, petitions to government agencies, and lawsuits—the OGC should inform the appropriate senior officers or other key employees within 24 hours.
